Baicalin is a flavonoid compound extracted from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. It is a light yellow powder at room temperature with a bitter taste.It is relatively stable under dilute acid conditions. For example, it will not be hydrolyzed in a 2% sulfuric acid aqueous solution, but the acid concentration is increased, and when the temperature rises to 110 ℃, it can be hydrolyzed to produce glucuronic acid and baicalein. Baicalin is hardly soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, soluble in hot acetic acid. It is green when it meets ferric chloride, and an orange precipitate is formed when it meets lead acetate. And baicalin is initially yellow when dissolved in alkali and ammonia, and soon it turns black brown.

Baicalin has the following applications/functions:

1. Baicalin has significant biological activity, so it has antibacterial, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, cholesterol-lowering, anti-thrombosis, relief of asthma, diarrhea and detoxification, hemostasis, anti-fetus, anti-allergic and antispasmodic effects. It has inhibitory effect on many kinds of bacteria, fungi and viruses.

2. Baicalin is a specific inhibitor of mammalian liver salivary enzymes. It has the effect of regulating certain diseases and has a strong anti-cancer response physiological effect. Baicalin can inhibit the activity of E. coli, significantly increase the conductivity and alkaline phosphatase content of E. coli bacteria, which may cause damage to it by increasing the permeability of the cell membrane and cell wall of the bacteria.

3. Baicalin is often used in the treatment of wet temperature, chest tightness and vomiting in summer temperature, fullness of damp-heat, diarrhea, jaundice, lung-heat cough, high fever and polydipsia, blood-heat vomit, carbuncle sore and fetal dysfunction.
