Imidurea is a member of ureas. It has a role as an antimicrobial agent. Imidurea is a Standardized Chemical Allergen. The physiologic effect of imidurea is by means of Increased Histamine Release, and Cell-mediated Immunity. Imidurea is used as an antimicrobial agent and preservative in cosmetics and toiletries. It acts as a formaldehyde releaser. It is very active against gram+ and gram- bacteria as a synergist in combination with parabens. Imidurea is more active against bacteria than fungi and is often combined with parabens to provide a broad spectrum preservative system.
This preservative is one of the most widely used preservative systems in the world. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers imidazolidinyl urea as one of the most common antimicrobial agents used in cosmetics. Due to its high water solubility, imidazolidinyl urea can be incorporated into almost all water-based cosmetics, toiletries, and cold mix formulations.
Imidurea has the following applications/functions:
1. Imidurea is a preservative in cosmetics. It has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, can inhibit Gram-negative and positive bacteria, and has a certain inhibitory effect on yeast and mold. It is mainly used to inhibit the reproduction of microorganisms. Imidurea can be compatible with various components in cosmetics, and the test results show that its antibacterial ability is not affected by surfactants, proteins and other special additives in cosmetics.
2. Imidurea is used for biological research on the antibacterial synergistic activity of essential oils and surfactants against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.
3. It can also be used in pharmacological studies that shift energy metabolism from mitochondrial respiration to glycolysis, nutrient activation, and drug shielding.
4. It can be used for local delivery of active molecules, including plant-based nanostructured carriers for therapeutic research.
