Isopropyl isodecanoate, the ester of isopropyl alcohol and isostearic acid. It retains none of the sensitizing potential pure isopropyl alcohol has. Isopropyl isodecanoate is an oily liquid (ester) that makes your skin nice and smooth, aka emollient. It is described as highly emollient or substantive, but with a light and easy spreading and nonoily skin feel. But isopropyl isodecanoate is acne-causing. Undiluted isopropyl isodecanoate was classified as a slight ocular irritant. Repeated applications of a 10.0% aqueous suspension of isopropyl isodecanoate to the skin of albino rabbits was well-tolerated. Based upon the safety test data on chemically similar isopropyl esters that is summarized in the report, it is concluded that isopropyl isodecanoate is safe as a cosmetic ingredient in the present practices of use and concentration. It has no effect on pregnant women.

Isopropyl isodecanoate is used in cosmetics as a binder, emollient and skin conditioner. Excessive use of isopropyl isodecanoate can cause skin keratinization and rough skin. Therefore, it is not advisable to use products containing it frequently. Isopropyl isodecanoate is a light oil ingredient that is not greasy or heavy.

Isopropyl isodecanoate has the following applications/functions:

1. Isopropyl isodecanoate is a commonly used emollient. It is a transparent oily liquid with good ductility and smooth skin touch. Isopropyl isodecanoate is easy to apply on the surface of the skin, it reduces the evaporation of water from the stratum corneum and enhances skin hydration. It makes the skin soft and elastic, and isopropyl isodecanoate improves rough, dry skin.

2. Isopropyl isodecanoate can also be used as a binder to bind together two immiscible raw materials in the formula to form a homogeneous mixture.

3. Isopropyl isodecanoate can be used in a variety of cosmetic products, such as lotions, sunscreens, body lotions, and color cosmetics. And it’s a synthetic ester, which when added to a makeup remover can penetrate into pores to clean up dirt, and it’s great for removing makeup.
