Polyethylene glycol 400
Name: Polyethylene glycol 400
CAS: 25322-68-3
Feature:
Polyethylene glycol 400 is a hydrophilic polymer. It can be easily synthesized by the anionic ring opening polymerization of ethylene oxide, into a range molecular weights and variety of end groups. When crosslinked into networks PEG can have high water content, forming “hydrogels”. Hydrogel formation can be initiated by either crosslinking PEG by ionizing radiation or by covalent crosslinking of PEG macromers with reactive chain ends. Polyethylene glycol 400 is a suitable material for biological applications because it does not trigger an immune response.
Polyethylene glycol 400 has the following applications/functions:
1. Polyethylene glycol 400 is a slip, softener and mold-release agent. It is water-soluble carrier substance. It offers moisture-stabilizing effect in creams and leaves a pleasant feel on the skin. It can be used in transparent toothpastes. It exhibits good compatibility with cetyl alcohol, glycerol, stearic acid, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, casein, vegetable albumin. Polyethylene glycol 400 has no emulsifying effect.
2. It has been used to modify therapeutic proteins and peptides to increase their solubility.
3. Polyethylene glycol 400 has emerging applications in the fabrication of bioactive and immunoisolating barriers for encapsulation of cells.
4. Polyethylene glycol 400 is available in a range of molecular weights which find utility as lubricants, chemical intermediates and heat transfer agents.
