Turkesterone or 20-Hydroxyecdysone (20E) is a natural ecdysteroid which – by acting on the ecdysone receptor – modulates the process of ecdysis – change of the moult or external cuticle – and the metamorphosis of arthropod invertebrates (insects, crustaceans, etc.). Although mammals do not have the ecdysone receptor, in vitro it has been observed that turkesterone can still influence their biological systems; in vivo, these effects are still unknown. In humans, it is hypothesized that turkesterone may bind to the gene encoding the estrogen receptor protein β (ERβ). Turkesterone has the following applications/functions:
- Turkesterone increase muscle mass by enhancing protein synthesis and decreasing protein catabolism.General stimulatory effects on protein synthesis have been shown for various ecdysteroids, including rubrosterone, a C-19 ecdysteroid lacking the whole side-chain. These effects have been observed in mice injected with 5 mg ecdysteroid/kg and they seem to result from increased mRNA translation efficiency and not from increased mRNA synthesis.
- Turkesterone stimulate bile secretion in rats, and they improve liver regeneration after chemically induced damage.
- Turkesterone has positive effects on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, it has been a very viable supplement to help with weight maintenance and fat loss. In terms of your generic ecdysteroid, there appears that the growth-promoting effects were due to due to better nitrogen retention and therefore a better protein metabolism profile with reduced protein catabolism and increased anabolism.
